Have you heard of GoodRx discounts? Well, now you have. So you have no excuse not to be saving money on your insanely expensive prescriptions. 😃
On one of my prescriptions alone, we saved over $1,000 in only six months with GoodRx discounts. Want to know just how simple it was?
If you participate in a high deductible health insurance plan or for any other reason you pay full cash price for your medications, you can start using GoodRx discounts to start saving some $$$.
GoodRx partners with pharmacies to provide prescription discounts at no cost to you. They collect zero personal information and it is as simple as printing out a coupon…or even simply accessing the coupon on your phone.
I know this may totally sound like a cheesy sales pitch, but it is not. I am just super excited to share this with you! Because I mean, who does not love saving money?!?!?! So in case you were wondering, I get nothing from sharing this with you.
Sound too good to be true? Trust me, it is not.
Before you click over and explore how much you can save, let me clarify a few questions you might have. Oh, and don’t forget to save this to Pinterest for reference later.
How Does GoodRx Work When You Have Insurance?
If you are one of the lucky few that still has an awesome insurance plan that offers copays for your prescriptions, GoodRx is not for you. Please consider yourself very fortunate!
But if you are like most of us and are paying for your prescriptions totally out of pocket (or at least until you meet your insurance deductible), then GoodRx can save you up to 80% on your prescriptions.
Follow these simple steps to start saving:
- Search your medication in the GoodRx Prescription Search tool.
- Make sure it has your city and state when it returns your results. (Will be at the top of the search.)
- Scroll through all the pharmacies and the prices listed.
- Once you find the best price and pharmacy available to you, click Get Free Coupon.
- Print your GoodRx discount coupon, save to your phone, or access by the mobile app (discussed below).
- Show the coupon to your pharmacy.
- Be sure and indicate that you want the GoodRx price, not your insurance cost.
I have found pharmacies to be very helpful with the GoodRx coupons. They are usually willing to tell you what your insurance cost would be to confirm that you are getting the best price.
So, in short:
- GoodRx discounts can be used with private insurance.
- GoodRx discounts can be used alongside Medicare.
- The pharmacy will override the insurance price with the GoodRx coupon price when you are paying the equivalent of the cash price, as you do with a high deductible plan until you meet the deductible.
How We Saved Over $1,000
We have private insurance through my husband’s employer. However, we participate in a high deductible plan and we contribute to an HSA (Health Savings Account). Our family deductible is $3,000. Meaning we pay 100% of all of our medical expenses until we have spent $3,000. No, this is not fun, but it is what it is.
In January, the doctor prescribed me a new medication. When I arrived at the pharmacy for pickup, I was hit with “That will be $237.98 mam.” 😖 I was like…… Ummmmm……what???? Begrudgingly I paid for it, totally blowing our January medical budget. I thought I had no other choice since it was something I really needed.
I went back to the doctor three weeks later and expressed my concerns over the cost of my new medication. My doctor genuinely seemed shocked at the high cost and introduced me to GoodRx. Why did I not know about this??
And get this, during my visit he simply typed in my prescription and found that the EXACT same medication at the EXACT same pharmacy was only $42.74. I was both relieved and aggravated that I had paid almost $200 more. I could have simply saved that much-needed cash had I only known. An expensive lesson learned.
A week later I went to have my prescription refilled and I took the printed coupon. The pharmacy simply entered it into their system and I paid the $42 for the next five months. (I had to start paying more in month six, see downside below.)
Boom! Six Months of GoodRx Discounts on 1 Prescription: $1,143.69
I know not everyone’s savings will be the same, but GoodRx claims on their website that their average customer saves $276 a year. I am sure you would rather have that money in your pocket too!
GoodRx Discounts are Available on Mobile
If you are already out picking up a prescription and totally forgot to look up your GoodRx discounts beforehand, they even offer an app to help you out.
Simply download the GoodRX mobile app. Search for your prescription. Show the GoodRx discount coupon to your pharmacy and save!
What is the Downside of GoodRx?
- Your pharmacy does not have to accept your GoodRx Coupon.
- It is a good idea to call and confirm before transferring your prescription to a new pharmacy.
- Your pharmacy can decide not to continue accepting GoodRx or change prices.
- The GoodRx coupon prices vary from pharmacy to pharmacy, just like without the coupon.
- You may have to move your prescriptions to save money.
- If you have multiple prescriptions, the cheapest option for each one may not be at the same pharmacy.
In our case, the GoodRx has literally saved us over $1,000, so shopping around and driving to a pharmacy that is not the closest is totally worth it.
It is my understanding that GoodRx negotiates with the pharmacies annually, so the prices can potentially change unexpectedly. The pharmacy could be purchased by another causing contract renegotiation or the original contract to just be ignored. This is what happened to me. I recently had to change to a new pharmacy and my price increased from $42 to $69. I was bummed, but $69 is still WAY better than $240.
Like I mentioned above, prices do vary from pharmacy to pharmacy so the cheapest prescription options may be different for each medication. Due to this disadvantage, not only did I have had to change to a new pharmacy but my husband has his medications filled at a different pharmacy.
Ultimately, you will need to decide if the GoodRx discounts are worth your time. Pharmacy hopping is not all that convenient. 🚗 But if you are lucky, the cheapest option will be mail order or a pharmacy that delivers!
